The department was established in the year 1966-67 with General course and the Honours stream became operational in the academic year 2001-02. From the academic session 2018-19, the department got initiated into the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The department is ably conducted by two full time teachers and one guest teacher. Along with the regular chalk and talk method, the department engages in ICT enabled classes and power Point Presentations. Regular film screenings are one of the hallmarks of the departmental activities. The faculty members are involved in research activities and they regularly participate in national and international seminars. The students are regularly monitored by the teachers so that their English language skills are up to the mark in order to effectively face the university examinations. There are a number of past pupils of the department who are currently engaged in higher studies and gainful employments.
CC1: This paper will introduce the newly inducted students to a comprehensive history of the English literature and society, beginning with Old English and extending to Modernism. The students will also learn about the basics of Philology which will help them in understanding the nature of the language.
CC2: This paper on European Classical Literature throws light on some of the seminal works of the Classical literature of ancient Greece and Rome, which is vital to an understanding the progress of human thought and the arts.
CC3: The objective of this course is to introduce the students to the works of Indian authors writing in English, extending from the novel of Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay to the drama of Mahesh Dattani.
CC4: This course attempts to introduce the British poetry and drama of the 14th to 17th centuries. Students get to step into the world of the Renaissance and such towering figures of English literature, William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe.
CC5: The objective of this course is to introduce the students to the treasures of American Literature, where they get to study poetry, novel, short stories as well as drama.
CC6: This paper on Popular literature is one of the most interesting addition in the CBCS syllabus where the students get a whole new outlook on some of the most widely read works of popular fiction. The students thus take their first step into the world of popular culture.
CC7: The students will learn the poetical and dramatic works of the stalwarts of 17th to 18th century British literature. The seminal work of Milton and Alexander Pope introduces the students to the debates of contemporary English society.
CC8: The course is intended to take the students through the world of Restoration comedy and simultaneously take a look at the colonial ventures of Robinson Crusoe. The paper also introduces the first nascent steps of journalistic writing.
CC9: This course takes the readers through the Romantic poems of both generations of Romantic writers. Along with them the paper introduces the students to the prose works of the period.
CC10: The students are introduced to the Victorian period of the history of English literature where they come across both poetry and novels of the most famous writers of the time.
CC11: This course offers a comprehensive outlook on the works of women authors, introducing the students to the waves of feminist movements across the globe.
CC12: The course intends to introduce the students to the post-war Modern scene of the British literature. The disillusionment in metanarratives and the fragmented reality of the 20th century England is brought out through the seminal works of Eliot and Lawrence.
CC13: This course intends to introduce the students to the gems of Modern European drama which extends their horizon of literary sensibility.
CC14: This course on Post-colonial literature is one of the most significant papers in the syllabus as it opens the eyes of the students to the world of colonial ventures and the post-colonial scenario of the erstwhile colonies.
DSE: These courses are designed for the students to help them explore the multiple dimensions of literature like Performance studies and literary theories as well as contemporary issues like media and mass communication.
LCC: The students are introduced to the different aspects of the English language like the difference between British and American language, official and personal correspondences as well as giving an outline of Advertisements and travelogues.
CC1/GE1: The course offers a selection of poems and short stories from the Renaissance period to the Modern.
CC2/GE2: The course offers a selection of essays, dramas and novels that extends from the Renaissance to the Modern period of literature.
CC3/GE3: The students are introduced to the women’s writing culled from across the globe to give a fair idea of the feminist struggles and the subsequent empowerment of women.
CC4/GE4: This paper will help students in undertaking research and academic writing and honing the analytic skills of students in understanding literature.
SECA1: This course aims to usher the students into the world of Translation studies where they are demonstrated the difference between transliteration and translation and properly analyze the consequences of translation.
SEC A2: This course termed Business Communication is targeted to enable the students towards effective business correspondences which includes writing CVs, Meeting Minutes and Reports.
SEC B1: The course is designed to inculcate in the students a flair for creative writing and preparing their works for publication.
SEC B2: This paper will help students in undertaking research and academic writing and honing the analytic skills of students in understanding literature.
AECC: This paper is designed for the common student to equip them to interpret and write error-free English.
