Puras-Kanpur Haridas Nandi Mahavidyalaya is one of the traditional centre of higher learning in Howrah district, West Bengal, India. This was a time when there was no college within the 20 miles square area surrounding this college. Dr. Jitendra Nath Nandi, a renowned Physician – a worthy son of the soil, established this college on 29.09.1966 with a mission to provide the education up to level of graduation to students from economically backward families, specially to female students and students from backward and minority classes who could not send their wards to the cities. The college drew its name from the twin villages Puras and Kanpur as it was located at the junction of the two villages. It is a co-educational non-government grant-in-aid type degree college, under affiliation of the University of Calcutta and recognized by the University Grant Commission under 2f & 12B. The college has enrolled nearly one thousand students and for their teaching and learning 35 dedicated full time and part time teachers are engaged with this institution along with 14 non-teaching staff who always provide their best services on behalf of college as well as student interest.
The college offers 08 subjects in Honours courses and 12 subjects in general courses at the Bachelors level. Spacious classrooms with public address systems and smart classrooms, open access semi-computerized central library with peaceful reading room, Laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography, Computer Laboratory, newly set-up Language Laboratory, separate common room for both boys and girls, separate students' and teachers' canteen, Gymnasium, indoor games and outdoor games in our own Playground are available in this institution.
Amenities to the students that are provided here includes students' concession, endowment prizes (The college has provision for scholarships for meritorious students of every discipline who secure highest marks in the last examination. The college does not provide for any stipend but give incentives to students of B.Sc.(General) courses.), health check-up facilities through Student Health Home etc. Extension activities in the form of N.S.S. and N.C.C.(both boys' and girls'), Annual Student Social Function, Social services in natural calamities, Aids awareness camp, Adult literacy program, Blood donation camp, Eye donation(after death) awareness camp are also worth mentioning.

Examination is the base of the main monitoring systems. Apart from that special care is given to the backward students by providing extra guidance beyond classroom teaching as well as through Remedial Coaching Centre at free of cost and at the same time it challenges the advanced students for their betterment.
